Martial arts should not be a mystery to anyone today. Information is easy to get reqarding all forms of martial arts IE Karate, Taekwondo, Tai Chi, Kung fu, MMa and a whole lot more. Its the quality of instruction that you receive that makes the difference. Yes there are a lot of great instruction videos out in the world today just like there were a lot of great martial art books printed back when no dvd's exisited. However, these items should be used as references and guides. I can buy a video or a book on how to fix my car but this does not make me a qualified vehicle mechanic, just some one with a little knowledge and possibly making me dangerous to the general public when i drive my car. So when joining any martial art organization you should approach the instructor after class or before and ask a few questions ??
How Long have you been training ???
Are you certified through a parent organization or are you all alone ??? (Mc DOJO Martial Arts usually have no associations)
Who tested you for your Black Belt ???
Are you a certified Coach through NCCP ???
Is your Martial Art recognized by other martial arts groups ???
Does your instructor train with others to upgrade their own knowledge ???
The most important question that should be asked, do you carry Liabilty insurance ???
Regardless, of how you put it no martial art is better or worse than another, each style has its strenghs and weaknesses and it all comes down to the individual who is training and the instructor who does the teaching. So buyer beware and remember to ask questions ?? how else are you going to learn ???
